The New York City Ballet is known for its contemporary approach to the classical ballet repertoire. Founded by choreographer George Balanchine and arts patron Lincoln Kirstein, it has a rich history of innovation and a repertoire that includes numerous iconic works.

The identity system for the New York City Ballet captures the fluidity and grace of ballet through the use of typography. Typography is used to mirror
the dynamic and precise nature of ballet dancers. This approach allows the type itself to perform across the mediums, imitating the movements and sophistication conveyed by the dancers on the stage. Imagery and typography are integrated to create a visual harmony that echoes the dialogue between music and movement in ballet, allowing the dancers' photographs to speak for themselves. A large format newspaper is used to further convey the concept of a large stage with dancers moving on it.
